Millennial Pink, pt. 1

2019

Consciously working solely in tones of pink, as a response to ‘Millennial Pink’, a specific shade of pink which has dominated social media for the past few years. This is a colour associated with maternal comfort and security, scientifically proven to reduce aggressive emotions. For the millennial generation, those born in the 90s, little seems positive; growing up in a digital age of social media, and disconcerting politics, with suicide as one of the biggest killers of young people and the constant threat of climate change, millennial debt is climbing and the newspapers are filled with stories of sexual harassment. It’s not surprising that a colour linked to innocence and an uncomplicated childhood has held such a strong position in the public consciousness for so long. Using old vernacular photography and ‘millennial pink’, as a representation of our yearning for the past, the artist questions whether this is viewed through a ‘rose-tinted lens’, a nostalgia for simpler times.
