Hiraeth

2019

Hiraeth became a body work which was a continuum of Nostalgia & Vernacular Photography, taking a motif; a dominant and recurring idea in the work, to explore this in new contexts. The use of ‘found’ and unknown family photographs remains central, continuing to view these deeply sensitive images as something which connects us to our childhood; a sense of comfort and familiarity. Inspiration for this continuation came from the idea of ‘home’, and the emotional and sentimental meaning this can carry. The majority of this work is therefore site-specific; identifying, recording and visually communicating locations which may only resonate to certain people.

hiraeth

(n.) a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past
